Hotjar Is Now Contentsquare: What Changed
Air360 Team on
If you went looking for Hotjar recently, you will have ended up somewhere else.
We checked on 25 August 2026. Every Hotjar URL we tried is a permanent redirect:
| You request | You get |
|---|---|
hotjar.com | 301 → contentsquare.com/hotjar/ |
hotjar.com/pricing/ | 308 → contentsquare.com/pricing/ |
hotjar.com/product/ | 301 → contentsquare.com/platform/capabilities/ |
The page title that comes back is “Contentsquare + Hotjar”. On the landing page, Contentsquare say it directly:
“Hotjar is now part of Contentsquare. The two platforms have merged into a single, more powerful experience intelligence platform.”
“If you were looking to try Hotjar, Contentsquare is where you sign up — and you’ll get a lot more for free.”
Hotjar the product still exists. Hotjar the company, the website and the separate way of buying it do not.
This has been coming for five years
Contentsquare announced the acquisition on 1 September 2021, describing Hotjar as “the leading product experience insights platform in the SMB market”. The announcement also said this:
“both companies will work closely together to make the most of their joint expertise, but will continue to operate independently for the foreseeable future.”
The foreseeable future ran about four years. Contentsquare’s help centre now carries an article titled “Hotjar is now part of Contentsquare - Plans and Pricing”, and Hotjar’s own documentation has one called “Hotjar is merging into Contentsquare - Billing and Legal changes”. Nothing here was hidden. It was announced, documented, and it still took most of the market by surprise, because acquisitions are announced once and absorbed slowly.
We should be fair about what this is. It is not a scandal, and Contentsquare has been open about every step. It is a normal consolidation, handled reasonably. The question worth asking is narrower: does the thing you bought still match the reason you bought it?
Why that question is not rhetorical
People chose Hotjar for reasons that were fairly specific.
It was self-serve. Pricing was published, you could sign up without talking to anyone, and the free tier was genuinely usable rather than a demo in disguise. It was built for small and mid-sized teams — Contentsquare’s own press release called it exactly that — and it did a handful of things well without requiring an analyst to operate.
Contentsquare is an enterprise platform. Pricing is custom and starts with a sales conversation. That is a legitimate way to sell software and it suits organisations with dedicated analytics functions and structured rollouts. It is close to the opposite of why a five-person growth team picks a tool.
There is a free plan, and Contentsquare say you get more on it than you did on Hotjar’s. That may well be true. But the shape of the relationship changed: the vendor you deal with, the pricing model above the free tier, and the roadmap your requests compete against are all now enterprise ones.
The practical bits worth checking
Your data retention may not be what you think. Contentsquare’s privacy FAQ states that personal data in their solution is kept for 13 months, that session replay data is deleted after 1 month, and that IP addresses are deleted after 3 days, each extendable on request.
One month of session replay is the number to sit with. If you investigate anything after the fact, or compare periods, that window decides what is answerable. We wrote about how long each analytics tool keeps your data if you want the comparison across vendors.
Your billing and contracting entity changed. That is what Hotjar’s “Billing and Legal changes” documentation is about. If you have a DPA, a security review or a procurement record naming Hotjar Ltd, it is worth checking what it names now. Legal teams tend to find this out at renewal, which is the worst time.
Your plan may have been mapped to a different one. Plan names and structures changed in the merge. Check what you are actually on and what it includes rather than assuming the old tier carried across, and confirm the session limits and retention against the current pricing page.
Support and roadmap now run through a larger organisation. Not worse, necessarily. Different, and with different priorities deciding what gets built.
If you are evaluating alternatives
A lot of people are, which is the honest reason this post exists. So, briefly and with the bias declared: we make Air360, a UX analytics platform, and we would obviously like you to look at it.
What is genuinely different is narrow. We keep your data rather than expiring it, so year-on-year and quarter-on-quarter comparisons stay possible and session replays do not disappear after a month. Your data is processed and stored in the EU, in France and Ireland, and is not used to improve anybody’s advertising. Setup is one script with no tagging plan. You can read the full comparison with Contentsquare, which now covers the Hotjar product too.
What is not different: Contentsquare is a capable platform with more breadth than we have, and for a large organisation with a dedicated analytics team it is a reasonable answer. If the free tier covers what you need, use it.
The reason to look elsewhere is not that something bad happened to Hotjar. It is that if you chose it because it was small, self-serve and predictable, the tool you chose for those reasons is now sold by a company organised around the opposite.
What to do this week
If you use Hotjar, spend twenty minutes: check which plan you are on now, check the retention settings against what your team actually needs, and check which legal entity your contract and DPA name. None of that is urgent, and all of it is easier now than during a renewal or an audit.
If you were about to sign up, you are signing up with Contentsquare. Worth knowing before rather than after.
